What is Botox?
“Botox” is actually a brand name for botulinum toxin A, neurotoxins, or neuromodulators, all of which relax the muscle into which it is injected. When we inject it into specific muscles of the face, it can relax that muscle that is cinching that overlying skin together and stop wrinkles from worsening, or stop them from forming. It can also smooth out wrinkles already there.
What brands of Botox do you carry?
At our medspa, we love using Jeuveau (one of the newest neurotoxins on the market) and Dysport (one of the most readily recognized ones on the market). There are a couple of differences.
What is the difference between Dysport and Botox or Dysport and Jeuveau?
Dysport spreads a little more than Botox or Jeuveau. Also, it comes in a vial of 300 units, and requires 2-2.5 times the number of units to achieve muscle relaxation compared to Botox or Jeuveau. This is why it is less expensive per unit, and ends up costing about the same amount as Jeuveau.
Jeuveau is similar to Botox in terms of molecular size, weight, and spread. However it is less expensive since it is approved only for aesthetic use, unlike Botox which has FDA indications for medical conditions (hence making the cost higher). In addition, Jeuveau is a more precise neurotoxin and its onset is quicker at 2-3 days.
How long does Botox last?
All neurotoxins should last at least 3 months. It will depend on various factors like your age, strength of muscles, how high your metabolism is, how much you workout/exercise, and more.
How much is it per unit?
How many units of Botox are needed?
This will vary from patient to patient, but generally the glabella (the area between the eyebrows, aka the “elevens”) will need 16-20 units at minimum. The forehead (frontalis muscle) will be highly variable but ranges from 6-16 units. Crows feet (the orbicularis oculi muscles) usually require 6-10 units per side. Lower face Botox will be variable. We will give you a customized dosage at your initial consultation and at each appointment.
Who can prescribe and inject Botox?
As botulinum toxin A is a prescription medication, only a medical provider (MD, DO, NP, or PA) with prescription authority can prescribe neuromodulators like Jeuveau, Dysport, & Botox. An RN can inject Botox once the patient has been seen (either by telemedicine or face-to-face) & cleared by the medical provider. Regulations vary by state, but in NC a Good Faith Exam (GFE) by a NP or equivalent (not an RN!) is required before your first injections and at least once annually.
