What is it?
Sclerotherapy is the gold standard for the treatment of spider veins and small varicose veins.
How does it work?
It involves injecting a sclerosant (a liquid agent - in our case, polidocanol/Asclera® - that irritates the unecessary vein), which then causes the vein to collapse, seal shut and be reabsorbed into the body. The affected veins then fade from view over time.
How many treatments are needed?
Usually 3-4 treatments, 6 weeks apart.
What are side effects of sclerotherapy?
Bruising can be common as well as some temporary itching and injection site irritation. Another "side effect": confidence.
What do I need to avoid after treatment?
For 2 to 3 days following the treatment, avoid heavy exercise, sunbathing, long plane flights, hot baths, hot tubs, or saunas.
What else do I need to know?
Compression stockings will need to be worn for at least 48 hours, and depending on the size and location of the affected veins, may be needed up to 2 weeks post-treatment. This is why the winter is the ideal time to get sclerotherapy!
How do you choose between laser therapy for spider veins & sclerotherapy?
Laser treatment is reserved for spider veins and is not indicated for varicose veins, whereas sclerotherapy can treat varicose veins up to 3mm in diameter. Also, we will use the laser for refractory spider veins (those that don't respond to sclerotherapy), but sclerotherapy is the gold standard otherwise.
Laser vs. Sclerotherapy — which is best?
Both laser therapy and sclerotherapy are effective treatments, and the best option depends on the type of veins being treated.
Laser therapy is best for:
- Spider veins (especially small, superficial, red, or purple veins)
- Patients who prefer a needle-free option
- Veins that have not responded to sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is best for:
- Spider veins and small varicose veins up to 3mm in diameter
- More extensive leg vein patterns
- Long-term vein correction (gold standard)
In many cases, the best results come from combining both treatments. Your provider will recommend the most effective plan based on your vein type and treatment goals.
