Warm Up Your Winter Skincare Regimen

Like it or not, the cold weather is here! And with the change in seasons should also mean a change in our skincare routines. You don’t have to settle for the winter blues when it comes to your skin!
Glowing Winter Skin
Here’s what you need to do to get the glow this winter:
❄️  Ensure adequate water intake! Our cells need plenty of water to maintain its inner hydration, but we often decrease our water intake when it’s cold unfortunately, since summer heat doesn’t trigger our thirst as readily. Additionally, when it gets dark earlier we often reach for more caffeine, which is actually dehydrating (and usually replaces our water). Make sure you drink water as often and as much as you would in the summer!
❄️  Support your skin’s pH… it’s the key to a healthy skin barrier. Most of what our skin is exposed to alters its pH and hinders your skincare regimen’s ability to do its job. There’s ONE major pH balancer you can use on your skin to ensure it’s not too alkaline (fun fact: our skin likes to be a little acidic). Read below to find out which skincare product that is!
❄️  Change up your cleanser – choose a cleanser that contains humectants & ceramides, as well as certain ingredients to protect your skin barrier.
❄️  Bump up the zinc – and no, we’re not talking about the supplement (although that’s important too!). In cold weather, we have higher rates of TEWL (Transepidermal Water Loss). Higher concentrations of topical zinc oxides – like those found in a particular Colorescience product – will be needed in the winter to prevent TEWL & maintain your skin’s hydration!
❄️  Exchange your Exfoliator – no need to rub your skin with the sharp edges of walnut shells! We know that sounds extreme but that’s what you’re doing when you use St. Ive’s Apricot Scrub! There are 2 types of exfoliants – chemical and physical. We love AHAs for chemical exfoliation, and are pretty picky when it comes to physical exfoliators! The most important fact to know – you should only be exfoliating 3 times a week, max!
❄️  Hydrate with HA. HA (Hyaluronic Acid) is key for ensuring your skin stays hydrated, not just moisturized. Not all HAs are effective! Hydrinity’s line of injectable grade HA is the first of its kind to be able to penetrate to the dermis – where all your skin’s hydration occurs!
❄️  Master the Moisture. Indoor heat + cold weather = very dry skin. Your moisturizer matters – ensure yours contains humectants & ceramides, supports the skin barrier, and prevents TEWL. Of course, we have our favorites in this department.
So what skincare products are our favorite picks for beating the winter blues, and why?
CLEANSERS

1️⃣ Prelude Facial Treatment Cleanser (Hydrinity).

  • This cleanser is so gentle but yet so effective given its ability to draw out impurities from deep within.
  • It contains Jojoba Seed Oil. Extracted from the Jojoba plant, this soothing oil closely matches our own natural sebum. As a rich source of fatty acids and antioxidants, it enhances skin’s restorative properties and provides skin soothing benefits.
  • Another amazing ingredient: Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil. This 100% natural botanical active derived from the heart of the sunflower seed acts as a guardian, shielding your skin from harsh environmental stressors while helping to soften and soothe rough, compromised skin.
  • Lastly, we love that it contains a unique ingredient called Salvia Hispanica Seed Extract. Derived from Chia seeds, this powerhouse ingredient is packed with antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and anti-inflammatory compounds which help protect the skin and maintain a balanced skin barrier.

2️⃣ Barrier Pro 1-Step Cleanser (Colorescience)

  • Formulated specifically to support our finicky skin barrier (remember that mentioned above?)
  • Contains Prickly Pear Extract. This is a humectant rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals
  • A very unique ingredient in this cleanser: Lactobacillus ferment. This probiotic-like ingredient supports your skin barrier’s microbiome!
SKIN BARRIER (pH Balance)

🏆 Hyacyn Active Mist (Hydrinity).  The key ingredient in this magic mist is Hypochlorous acid. Before it made its debut on the skincare scene, it was often used for sterilization of the skin in hospital settings. Safe for all skin types & mucous membranes, it also contains Sodium phosphates, electrolytes, & water. Unfortunately other hypochlorous acids on the market (like Magic Molecule and Tower 28) degrade into expensive salt water within days to weeks once it is opened (due to exposure to O2 or UV rays). Hyacyn has its own patented packaging and maintains a 5.6 pH balance for 2 years! How it works:

  • Calms skin, restores the pH of the skin back to balance
  • Has anti-aging properties
  • Protects skin microbiome
EXFOLIATION

1️⃣ Prelude Cleanser (Hydrinity): Organic Botanical AHAs.  This proprietary mix of gentle AHAs works to enhance skin exfoliation, promote cellular turnover, and improve overall skin tone and texture.

2️⃣ AlphaRet Exfoliating Peel Pads (Skinbetter Science):  Exfoliating pads featuring the award-winning retinoid, AlphaRet, a unique technology that is made up of a combination of a retinoid and an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), along with a triple-acid blend of glycolic, lactic and salicylic acid, in individually packaged pads.

3️⃣ Detoxifying Scrub Mask (Skinbetter Science): Uses gentle, biodegradable spherical beads to lightly resurface the outer layer of skin. It also is a clay-based, so it draws out impurities as it works!

4️⃣ Chemical Peel – AlphaRet Professional Peel (Skinbetter Science): This medical grade peel delivers results without extensive peeling (because who has time for that?). It is a highly concentrated blend of lactic, glycolic and salicylic acid and can ONLY be administered by a licensed esthetician like the ones at Elevated Aesthetics!

HYDRATORS (Hyaluronic Acid/HA)

1️⃣ Restorative HA Serum with PPM⁶ Technology (Hydrinity). HA is hydrating, simply stated. We only recommend HAs that come from Hydrinity because of the way they are made (they are much purer than any other on the market) and their efficacy. Most HAs (OTC yes, but also even some medical grade!) are made in Asia in mass quantities. Hydrinity’s is made in much smaller batches, is triple filtered (purest form on the market), & is 100% injectable grade. It is specially formulated to extend past the epidermal layer into the dermis – where hydration is key. HAs found in OTC skincare lines are often sticky and also ineffective because the molecule is not getting past the epidermal layer! Our last note about Restorative HA Serum in particular? It contains Bisabolol – German chamomile + Boswellia extract. Bisbolol helps with suppleness & reduces flaking, both of which are key in dehydrated skin.

2️⃣ Renewing HA Serum with PPM⁶ Technology (Hydrinity):  This HA by Hydrinity is less hydrating but also important in the winter for one reason: 3rd generation squalane. Squalane is a naturally occurring lipid in the skin that makes up sebum, so it is exceptionally hydrating and moisturizing. It’s often found in many skincare lines and moisturizers, but none of them can take squalane down to the dermis like Hydrinity’s super-charged HA can!

MOISTURIZERS

1️⃣ Barrier Pro Essential Moisturizer (Colorescience):  This breakthrough moisturizer contains a tri-molecular weight HA as well as advanced humectants like aquacacteen (which is rich in fatty acids to promote ceramide production) & snow mushroom (exceptional ability to hold & retain water in skin).  Additionally, it contains several patented ingredients like Crystallide® (which allows for better distribution of moisture) and Vital ET® (a Vit E emollient that supports and rescues dry skin). The research on this product impressed Tara enough to add it to her skincare regimen recently!

2️⃣ Trio Rebalancing Moisture Treatment (Skinbetter Science):  Great for dry to normal/combination to oily skin, Trio Rebalancing is Tara’s favorite and her go-to moisturizer. Made up of HA and Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMF), it supports the skin barrier. It also contains some very unique ingredients:

  • Urea Complex: Provides intense moisturization.
  • Sodium PCA and Sodium Lactate: Enhance moisture and hydration of the skin.
  • Salicornia Herbacea Extract: Supports increased skin hydration.
  • Cholesterol and Ceramides: Support hydration and the skin’s barrier.
  • Linoleic and Linolenic Acids: Essential fatty acids that support the skin’s barrier (Omega-6 and Omega-3).
  • Carnitine: A naturally occuring amino acid that helps hydrate the skin.
  • Squalane: Supports moisture retention to improve the look of skin suppleness.
  • Aminopropyl Ascorbyl Phosphate: A form of Vitamin C that supports hyaluronic acid and increases skin smoothness.
  • Sodium Hyaluronate: Helps provide high moisture retention.
  • Additional Moisturization Support: Glycerin, Caffeine and Jojoba Esters

3️⃣ Trio Luxe Moisture Treatment (Skinbetter Science):  Ideal for moderate to severely dry skin to replenish dull, dehydrated skin for a healthier-looking appearance and improved skin texture. Tara loves this one in the winter! Contains all that Trio Rebalancing offers but also includes:

  • Glycine: An amino acid that replenishes and hydrates the skin.
  • Niacinamide: A form of Vitamin B3 that promotes skin hydration and healthy-looking skin.
  • Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Extract: A naturally derived antioxidant that helps to reduce the appearance of redness.
SUNSCREEN (Ones that contain Zinc Oxide)

Just because you aren’t at the beach sunbathing doesn’t mean you can skip the sunscreen! You’re still being exposed to UV rays and HEV rays (blue light) on a daily basis. What you may not know is that your sunscreen should contain zinc oxide in the winter! This ingredient helps to prevent TEWL (Transepidermal Water Loss), so it helps maintain hydration.

🏆 Sunforgettable® Total Protection®Brush-On Shield:  This formulation may not be enough to be your base sunscreen, but it better be added at the end and throughout the day. The reason for this is that it contains a much higher concentration of zinc oxide than any other Colorescience SPF product!

As you can see, we have strong opinions on some of the skincare products you need to invest in this winter (and which ones to avoid! 🤭).  The important thing about winter skin is that you don’t have to suffer with dull, dehydrated, dry skin. Glowing skin can be yours this winter! Let us help you!
